After two years of thoughtful consideration, planning, and preparation, the Humble Ranch Education & Therapy Center (HRETC) Therapeutic Riding and Camp Programs will be handed over to the Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports (STARS) organization in 2015, it was announced today by Cheri Trousel, Executive Director HRETC, Bob Dapper, HRETC Board President, and Julie Taulman, Executive Director of STARS. “For the past three years HRETC has been collaborating with STARS and we came to realize that we were serving not only the same local clientele, but additionally many of our volunteers and donors were supporting both organizations. It feels like a natural progression to be proceed down this path” said Trousel.

“This 2014 season finds us celebrating 15 years of providing equine therapy with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude; blended with a bit of sadness as we part with these programs created with so much love and passion by so many dedicated people,” Trousel added. “Yet we look forward with excitement for the possibilities that the future holds with the very qualified STARS team at the helm. “This is a natural fit between our two organizations,” states Julie Taulman, STARS Executive Director. “Our missions are similar; we just use different activities to help our clients with disabilities. Our goal is to build on the great program that Cheri and her staff have put together so that we can continue providing therapeutic and recreational opportunities to individuals with special needs.”

Trousel indicated that the medically based hippotherapy program will continue to be offered at Humble Ranch through Sports Med at Yampa Valley Medical Center but HRETC will no longer be in need of volunteers or donations to facilitate the hippotherapy program.

“It has been our privilege and honor to work with all of our volunteers over the years,” said Dapper. “We are so grateful for their time, energy and financial assistance and invite supporters to move forward with STARS.

STARS Therapy Riding Program will take place at Wandering Creek Ranch located just up the road from Humble Ranch beginning in June, 2015. STARS will offer private and semi-private lessons as well as group riding programs as part of their summer camps. A complete schedule including the new therapy riding program will be available on-line by March 1, 2015 at www.steamboatstars.com and the summer brochure will be mailed home to current STARS and Humble Ranch clients.

About HRETC: Since June of 2000 the Humble Ranch has been home to a Colorado non-profit, The Humble Ranch Educational and Therapy Center (HRETC). The goal of the HRETC is to provide therapeutic activities for individuals with special needs, in a natural environment, outside the confines of a traditional hospital setting.

About STARS: STARS became a 501(c) 3 in 2007 with the mission to empower and enrich lives through adaptive recreational activities. STARS offers daily programs throughout the winter season and weekly programs and camps during the summer in: Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding, Snowshoeing, Nordic, Hiking, Canoeing, Archery, Tennis, Swimming, Camping, Biking, Kayaking, and Waterskiing. Last year STARS served over 400 individuals and provided over 10,866 hours of lessons.

One evening a year locals and visitors gather to support youth mentoring program in the Yampa Valley. This year Partners in Routt County (Partners) hosts its signature fundraising event, Java & Jazz on September 5, 2014 at the Larson Barn from 5:30-8:30 pm.

“Java & Jazz is the fundraising heart and soul of Partners,” said Michelle Petix, executive director of the organization. “It is the only event we host, and is the greatest opportunity for us to raise money to support the strategic goals of our One-to-One and School-Based Mentoring programs, as well as raise awareness about what Partners does in our community.”

Java & Jazz features local coffee vendors including Steamboat Coffee Roasters, Mountain Brew and Steaming Bean for an evening of coffee tasting and live music from Mark Rasmussen and his jazz quartet. Food, wine, and specialty drinks are also included along with an impressive silent auction featuring items from local businesses and companies such as Catamount Golf Club, Steamboat Ski Resort, Steamboat Flyfisher, and Old Town Hot Springs, as well as restaurant, spa, and vacation packages, sporting event tickets and athletic equipment.

Tickets to the 2014 Java & Jazz are $80 for two or $50 for one, and can be purchased on the Partners website, at their office in Sundance Plaza, or at the event. The signature fundraising event will take place at the Larson Barn, located on Highway 131 between Steamboat and Stagecoach, adjacent to Haymaker Golf Course.

“Every year we look forward to meeting new friends and reconnecting with supporters, who are the foundation of the Partners organization and understand the worth of investing in the youth of our community,” said Petix. “Not only is this is a fundraiser, but it’s our opportunity to thank volunteers, supports and donors past, present and hopefully future.” “We are grateful to all of our event sponsors, especially this year’s presenting sponsor, the Craig-Scheckman Family Foundation.”

Partners in Routt County has been serving youth in Hayden, Oak Creek, and Steamboat Springs for seventeen years by facilitating partnerships between adult volunteers and youth. PRC works with mentors to build self-esteem and increase school bonding in children, while reducing the level of drug use and delinquency. Last year, through one-to-one and school based mentoring programs, PRC reached over 600 youth in Routt County.

Supporters who are unable to attend this year’s annual fundraising event can still support local youth by making a tax-deductible donation. For more information on donations and Java & Jazz please visit PartnersRouttCounty.org or contact Michelle Petix at michelle@partnersrouttcounty.org, or 879-6141 ext 302.

Thanks!

In her painting “Rainy Days and Mondays,” artist Mary Pape’s true passion for capturing wildlife on the canvas shines through. A solitary raven sits perched on a rock, regal and with almost photographic quality, as beads of rain slide down its feathers. Though the weather in this scene is bleak, the contrast of the light reflecting through the raindrops and the statuesque bird against the austere background was majestic, said award-winning painter and acclaimed author Betsy Dillard Stroud.

Dillard Stroud, judge for the inaugural Art Steamboat competition that concluded Aug. 17, was impressed with the caliber and variety of work displayed by the 30 finalists. But Pape’s oil painting drew her in at first glance.

“The contrast of the beautifully painted raven and the ambiguous background was stunning,” Dillard Stroud said. “It supplied the mystery that I love to see in a painting, and made the painting transcend ordinary realism.

“Ms. Pape’s painting stood out in every way – in content, composition, and color.  What a memorable painting.  It melded the viewer’s heart with that of the raven’s and created a memorable dialogue between viewer and painting.”

As the winner of the $10,000 grand prize in the inaugural competition, Pape said she was honored and called the experience “thrilling and amazing.”

“I woke up the next morning and wondered if I had been dreaming,” Pape said. “It truly was a dream come true.  The prize money in each category is a major validation of artists’ work and almost unheard of in fine art competitions. I know this will become one of the most sought after competitions in the years to come.”

Kevin Aldrich of Fort Collins earned second place with his colorful and tactile depiction of a street façade entitled “Fourth Street, Troy New York.” In third place, Oak Creek native Sandi Poltorak’s “In Her Arms to Rest” offers an intricate graphic drawing of a strong Native American woman posing with her child.

The inaugural Art Steamboat competition featured the works of 30 finalists throughout the 7th annual All Arts Festival which took place Aug. 1 to 17 in Steamboat Springs.

The 30 finalists hailed from a variety of western states, from Steamboat Springs to Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah.

The Wahl Company (Hair clippers and trimmers) is shooting a TV commercial at the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series this weekend.  The video shoot will be part of the “Real Guys” ad campaign for Wahl hair clippers.

The documentary style spot will profile cowboys pre-rodeo and during their event.  They are also planning to shoot some film of downtown Steamboat over the weekend. This is a sequel to a spot they did last year filming minor league baseball players of the Clinton LumberKings, the Class A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.

This is a great opportunity to showcase Steamboat and the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series.

So be sure to come out and help pack the stands!  It’s going to be a great weekend for rodeo action, and on top of that – fans can see the commercial being filmed.  All filming will happen during the rodeo performance.

The production company shooting the commercial is called Picture Show Films.  They are based in Chicago, Illinois. Check out a documentary video they did for Nike involving high school football.
